本シリーズでは、レジデンスプログラムや展覧会であじびに滞在したことのあるアーティストに､今住んでいる街の様子や自身の状況、また現地での芸術活動についての報告を紹介していきます。第一回目は、パキスタンのアーティスト、ドゥリヤ・カジさんからの現地報告です。
第1回目 ドゥリヤ・カジ （アーティスト / パキスタン）
パキスタンのカラーチー在住のアーティスト、ドゥリヤ・カジは、ほか3人の作家や職人たちと、第1回福岡トリエンナーレ（1999年）に出品された『ハート・マハル』を共同制作しました。この作品は昨年の「アジア美術、100年の旅」に出品されたのでご記憶の方も多いでしょう。またドゥリヤは、2006年に当館で開催した「ロリウッド！－パキスタンの映画ポスター展」でも協力していただきました。
そのドゥリヤから、今月初め、黒田館長あてに、こちらでの在宅の暮らしを気遣うメールが入りました。それに対して彼がアジ美と日本の状況を伝え、あわせてパキスタンの状況を尋ねたところ、日本ではまったく報道されることのないこの国の状況と、ドゥリヤの近況を教えてくれました。

お元気そうで何よりです。新しい暮らし方というのは、多くの調整を必要とするものです。私は『夜明け（Dawn）』という新聞に隔週でコラムを書いています。私にとって、これは通常のコラムというよりも挑発的な問題提起であり、それはまた自らの芸術実践の一部だと考えています。先週日曜日のコラムには、「死と共に生きる」というタイトルをつけました。特に気に入っているのは、７世紀の僧侶の言葉を引用した「この世に生きる人間の今の暮らしは、一羽のスズメがお堂のなかを飛び回るようなものである」という一節です。次回は、創造的な避難としての自己隔離について書こうと思っています。
ご質問にあった、パキスタンの社会システムをコントロールすることの問題点についてですが、私たちのような国では人々の行動を追跡することは困難です。詳しい内情はわかりませんが、シンド州の政府、警察、軍隊が人々を屋内にとどめるためにいろいろと動いていることは確かです。ほとんどの人はマスクをして屋内に留まっています。金曜礼拝のときでさえ、モスクは閉鎖されてしまいました。とりわけ胸を打つのは、とても多くの人々が、貧しい人々、特に日雇い労働者たちに食料配給を行なっているということです。
小さな家やアパートのある貧しい地区の裏通りでは、たいてい路上に座っている人々を見かけることがあります。今のところ、感染者数は抑えられていると思います。簡単に検査を受けることができないので、もっと多くの人が感染しているかもしれませんが、死亡者数は少ないようです。もしかすると今後、数が急増するのではと予想しています。ワッツアップ（注 : SNSアプリケーション）のなかには、最新の統計、奇跡の治療法、たくさんのおかしなネット情報、そしてもちろん祈り、本当に多くの祈りが互いに混じり合っています。
新型コロナウイルスが拡散した主な原因は、宗教的な巡礼や自宅での結婚式にあったと考えられています。警察と軍は、パンジャブ州で行われた宗教的な集まりに参加した人の中に陽性反応が出た人がいないかどうか、全国で捜索している最中です。
今は妹と一緒に家にいて、自分のスタジオの整理をしています（大学で過ごす時間が長かったせいで、ずっと手付かずのままでした）。新しいスタジオを建てたのですが、ロックダウンが始まったので、ドアや窓が付いていないままです。私はそこに座って、マンゴーの木に新しい果実が実るのを見たり、カラスや九官鳥の会話に耳を傾けたり、野良の子猫と友達になったりすることを楽しんでいます。毎朝、ちっちゃい鳥の甘い甘い歌声が聞こえてきます。
In this series, artists who have stayed at the museum for residency programs and exhibitions will report on their current lives in the city, their conditions, and artistic activities.
01 . Durriya Kazi artist | Pakistan
Durriya Kazi is an artist living in Karachi, Pakistan. She, along with three other artists and artisans, collaborated on an installation titled Heart Mahal, which was on exhibit in the 1st Fukuoka Asan Art Triennale in 1999. Many of you may remember this work because it was exhibited in the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum 20th Anniversary: Journey through Asian Art last year. She also cooperated with us in the exhibition of Pakistani Film Posters that was held at the museum in 2006.
Earlier this month, she sent an email to Director Kuroda expressing her concern for life at home in Fukuoka. In response, he explained the situation in Japan and the museum, then asked her how she lived in Pakistan. The story she told us about the situation in Pakistan is hardly reported in Japan. Also, she shared her recent situation with us.
The following is a report that she rewrote for us to post on our SNS.

Glad you are well. A lot of adjusting needed for the new lifestyle. I have been writing biweekly columns for Dawn, a newspaper. I see them as provocations rather than columns, and for me, they are part of my art practice. Last Sunday’s was titled “Living with Death.” The line that I liked best was a quote from a 7th-century monk “The present life of men on earth is like the flight of a single sparrow through the hall.” The next will be about self-isolation as a creative retreat.
You asked about problems with controlling social systems in Pakistan. It is difficult in countries like ours to keep track of people. While I do not know the inside story, I certainly see the Sindh government, police, and army doing a lot to keep people indoors. Almost everyone wears masks and stay indoors. Mosques are closed for congregational Friday prayers. Most impressive is how many people are distributing food rations to poor people, especially daily wage earners.
In back lanes of poorer localities with small houses or apartments, we do see people sitting in the streets. I think so far we have kept the numbers down. More may be infected as testing is not easily available, but deaths seem low. I expect it may suddenly arise. Whatsapp is a combination of the latest statistics, miracle cures, lots of funny memes, and of course prayers – lots of prayers!
Our main source of the spread of COVID-19 seems to have been from religious pilgrimages and weddings held at home. Police and army are searching across the country for people who attended a religious gathering in Punjab, where some tested positive.
I am enjoying being at home with my sister, catching up with sorting out my studio (so neglected because of my time spent at the university). I built a new studio, but then the lockdown started, so the doors and windows are not fitted. I still like to sit there and watch the new fruit grow on the mango tree, listen to the conversations of crows and mynahs, and make friends with a young stray cat. Every morning I hear a very small bird with the sweetest song.
