1976年、ベトナムに生まれる。1999年、ハノイ美術大学美術科卒業、2003年、シカゴ美術大学付属大学で修士号を取得。紙を使ったランタンによる繊細なインスタレーション作品を制作するアーティスト。福岡滞在中、八女和紙などを用いてランタンを制作し、2018年10月に開催された「博多旧市街まるごとミュージアム」で龍宮寺三宝大荒神堂にインスタレーション「水とみる夢」として構成した。

Born in 1976. Lives in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Vu creates sensitive installation work using paper-formed lanterns. During the 2018 residency program, the artist researched the communities and the architectuers in relation to the history of Fukuoka city. Vu created an installation, Dreaming with Water, using Yame washi papers and Vietnamese hand-made papers and exhibited it in the exhibition ART IN HAKATA OLD TOWN in 2018.

I am living in Hanoi, Vietnam
Since late January 2020, when the coronavirus (COVID-19) was spreading uncontrollably in Wuhan, China, we were worried as Vietnam is very close to China. Therefore, all schools from kindergarten to university have been closed for the last three months, switching the teaching/learning programs into the online format. So far in Vietnam, there have been 270 patients; among those, 222 already being recovered, and there is no death. I live in Hanoi, the city of over 8 million people with a high risk of the infection as its population is very congested.
In February and early March, our Government required all passengers arriving in Vietnam to declare their travel history and to check their temperature at the airport. However, that was not enough, by the second week of March, numbers of COVID-19 patients started to increase, those are mainly from the outside visitor's source affecting both Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh city and some provinces.
For the last five weeks of late March and April, the government has decided to close the borders to tourists and only open for Vietnamese citizens to return home from abroad. And all arrival passengers would be sent into quarantine in military bases or remote hospitals when they landed at the airport.
April was particularly difficult. Hanoi was completely closed except pharmacies and groceries that were allowed to open. Everything else was shut down, including public transportation, taxi, museums, and institutions. Even exercising by the park or walking by the lake was forbidden. I have never seen such an empty Hanoi like this in my life. Every day, we used to watch the news at 6 am and 6 pm, because that was when the Ministry of Health informed the new infection cases, recovered cases, and people’s lives under quarantine.
Vietnam is trying to keep COVID-19 under control. That is why we develop a system called F0, F1, F2. If a person is diagnosed as positive, he or she would be labeled as F0, his/her spouse, parents, children who live in the same house with F0 would become F1, then friends, neighbors who contacted this person would become F2. The government can trace down places where all F0, F1, F2 have been in the last 14 days, and the people in those areas would also being in quarantine and locked down. That is why even though we only have 270 cases, however, there have been over 50.000 people being put into quarantine both at home as well as in the military bases. We are fully aware of our vulnerable health system and working very hard in controlling COVID-19 in order not to spread it.
I have never witnessed such a pandemic with a huge crisis like this in my life. It affected all countries, all my family, friends all over the world from different backgrounds in society. For the past months living with social distancing, I have much more time to reflect and to think about what is essential in life, and here they are.
We are all in this storm together. I spent a lot of time chatting with my friends from the U.S, Europe, and different parts of Asia, checking in to see how they are doing and if their families are ok, then talking about difficulties we are facing. It just made me realize life is so precious and very impermanent. Things that we used to do in daily life before the pandemic (such as walking by the lake, going to the cinema, gathering with friends) that we took it for granted has now become a luxury. Minimalism has become our lifestyle during the lockdown. For years, my hope was always that I would be able to adopt Minimalism as my way of living one day, but I never succeed in doing it. During the pandemic, it forced us to do so. Since many people lost their jobs, including myself, the major income was down that I must focus on spending money only on what is truly important such as basic food, household good, basic medication. I have been wearing my pajamas since January. When I look around my house, into my closet, I realize that there are so many things I don’t even need. I think after the pandemic is over, it will change how people’s perspectives about material possession. We are social distancing physically but not mentally.
I have never talked to friends so much as I have done in the last two months. Since many of my friends whom I haven’t gotten a chance to talk to for many years are under the lockdown now, we become closer through the small frame of the screen. Via Zoom, Skype, Messenger, we check in to ask if they are safe, update on the situation in where they are, if anyone need help, then we share our art practice, talking about current movies, TV show, opera, orchestra, performance, museum and doing yoga online. I can’t imagine what it would be like in this pandemic without the internet. In many ways, I feel we are geographically apart, but we are so close together in this. Art is a very powerful tool to contribute to society. In addition to being a form of entertainment, art reflects reality, and it tells the story during our crisis. Many of my artist friends have contributed their artworks to organize an auction to raise money to help the doctors and nurses. They are also making face masks to deliver them for free for the community; one of them even creates a unique mask design with his drawing on it.
The pandemic has brought out the kindness in many people and reset the value of life. It also shows a sweet side of our Government in Vietnam. Since Vietnam is a small country with a developing healthcare system, we are very worried about this pandemic, and the damage could happen if it spread here. The government took the pandemic very seriously since it started. The cost of COVID-19 testing and treatment is free. People under quarantine and being locked down are provided with daily meals, temperature checks, health consultations and even more many people in the poor area got paid financially during their quarantine time as they couldn’t go to work. They also provide food delivery to many low-income families. Many landladies and landlords have waived the rent for the tenants, helping them tremendously during this difficult time.

2020年1月下旬から中国、武漢で新型コロナウイルスが制御不能なほど蔓延していましたが、ベトナムは中国との距離が近いので、私たちはとても心配していました。そのため、幼稚園から大学までのすべての学校は3ヶ月間閉鎖され、教育・学習プログラムはオンラインへと移行することになりました。これまでのところ、ベトナムでは270人の患者がいますが、そのうち222名はすでに回復しており、死亡例は出ていません。私が住むハノイは人口800万人を超える都市で、その人口密集度のゆえに、新型コロナウイルスの高い感染リスク下にあります。
2月から3月初旬にかけて、政府はベトナムに到着する全ての旅行者に空港での渡航歴の申告と体温検査を実施しました。しかしこの措置は十分とはいえず、3月の第2週には、新型コロナウイルスの患者数が増加しはじめました。患者は主に外部からの来訪者で、ハノイ、ホーチミンや他の地方に影響を及ぼしていきました。3月後半から4月までの5週間、政府は旅行者に対して国境を閉じ、海外から帰国するベトナム国民のみに開くことを決定しました。空港に到着した帰国者はすぐに、軍の基地や遠隔地の病院に隔離されることになりました。
4月は特に厳しい状況でした。ハノイでは、薬局と雑貨店の営業は認められていましたが、それ以外の公共交通機関、タクシー、美術館、施設は完全に閉鎖されました。公園での運動、湖でのウォーキングすらも禁止されました。このように空っぽになってしまったハノイの街を見たのはこれまでの人生で初めてです。私たちは毎日朝6時と夕方6時に放送されるニュースを見ていました。それは保健省がこのニュースを通じて新しい感染者数、回復者数、そして隔離中の人びとの様子を伝えていたからです。
ベトナムでは、現在も新型コロナウイルス（の感染）を制御しようと試みています。そのために、F0、F1、F2と呼ばれるシステムを開発しています。もし、ある人が新型コロナウイルスと診断された場合、その人はF0と表示されます。F0と同じ家に同居している配偶者、両親、子供はF1となり、その人と接触した友人たちや近所の人たちはF2となります。政府は過去14日間にF0、F1、F2が全員一緒にいた場所を追跡し、その場所にいた人たちも隔離・監禁の対象にしています。そのために、ベトナムではまだ270件の感染しかないにもかかわらず、5万人以上の人びとが軍基地や自宅での隔離下にあるのです。国は自国の医療システムの脆弱さを十分認識しており、新型コロナウイルスを拡散させないため懸命にコントロールしています。
これまでの人生のなかでこれほど大きな危機を伴ったパンデミックを目撃したことはありませんでした。あらゆる国々、私の家族、そして様々な社会的背景を持つ世界中の友人たち全てに影響を及ぼしたのです。この数ヶ月、社会的距離をとって暮らしながら、人生において何が大切かを考え、振り返るための多くの時間を手にすることになりました。
私たちは皆、この嵐の只中にいます。私は多くの時間をアメリカ、ヨーロッパ、アジア各地の友人たちとの会話に費やしました。友人たちの様子を確かめ、家族の安否を尋ね、私たちが直面している困難について話し合いました。このことは、命というものがとても尊く、また同時に永久的なものではないことを私に気づかせてくれました。パンデミックの前に私たちが日々の生活で当たり前にしていたこと（例えば、湖の周りを歩いたり、映画館に行ったり、友人たちと集まること）は、今では贅沢なものになってしまいました。ロックダウンのあいだ、ミニマリズムが私たちの生活スタイルになりました。何年も前から、いつか自分の暮らし方にミニマリズムを取り入れたいと思っていましたが、できないままでした。パンデミックのあいだは、むしろそうせざるを得ませんでした。自分も含めて多くの人が仕事を失い、主要な収入源が減ってしまった今、基本的な食料、生活用品、基本的な医薬品といった本当に重要なものだけにお金を使うことに注意を払うようになりました。1月以降、ずっとパジャマを着て過ごしています。家の中や洋服棚を見渡してみると、自分にとって必要のないものがたくさんあることに気がつきました。パンデミックが終わった時、物質的所有に対する人びとの見方は一変していると思います。私たちは物理的には社会的距離を取っていますが、精神的にはそうではないのです。
私にとって、この2ヶ月ほど友人たちとたくさん話したことは、これまでの人生でありませんでした。これまで長年話す機会すらなかった友人たちの多くもロックダウン下にあったので、私たちはスクリーンの小さな枠のなかでより親密になっていきました。ズーム、スカイプ、メッセジャーを介して、私たちはお互いの安全やそれぞれの場所での近況報告、援助の必要の有無を確認したり、芸術実践を共有したり、映画やテレビ番組、オペラ、オーケストラ、パフォーマンス、美術館について話をしたり、オンラインでヨガをしたりしました。私には、インターネットが無いパンデミックがどのようなものになるのか想像できません。いろいろな意味で、私たちは地理的に離れ離れになっているけれども、このようなかたちで一緒に近くにいるのだ、とも言えます。アートは社会に貢献するとても力強い）ツールです。エンターテイメントの一形態であるだけでなく、アートは現実を映しだし、危機における私たちの物語を語ってくれます。美術作家の友人たちの多くは、医師や看護師への支援金オークションを行なうために、自らの作品を寄付していました。フェイスマスクを作ってはコミュニティに無償で配る人たちもいますし、ある作家は自分のドローイング付きのとても個性的なマスクをデザインしていました。
